White Haute
Labor Day is an American holiday observed on the first Monday of September. Back in the early 20th century, the wealthy and status-conscious wore white throughout the summer because it was light and cool. Once summer ended (usually marked by Labor Day), those white pieces were packed away in favor of the darker shades of a fall wardrobe. Then Coco Chanel, ever the fashion rebel, decided to defy convention and wear white year-round starting in 1920 (protocol411.com). Naturally, others copied her lead. So technically, wearing white after Labor Day is no longer a fashion crime. It is still surprising how many people cling to that old rule! Without a doubt, you will soon see White Party or Labor Day events being advertised. Most people treat these as their final chance to wear their white pieces before next summer. That means you have got to nail the look! White shows everything. Do not feel you HAVE to wear something fitted. A white bodycon simply is not flattering on every figure. Choose a wrap dress instead, since it flatters almost everyone. An A-line, shift dress, or skater dress are also great choices. A crisp, clean, heavenly white dress can absolutely look angelic, but a bodycon on the wrong body? The devil is a LIAR!
Styling Tips
Matching shades of white can be tricky, but do not let that stop you from pairing a white top with a skirt, shorts, or pants. Watch your proportions and silhouette closely. Because white is a light color, it is NOT slimming. So make sure each piece looks as close to tailored as possible. Do not fall into the common trap of thinking bigger clothing hides more. It actually looks sloppy and shapeless. Say it with me: clothing should FIT and FLATTER. For accessories, you can go minimalist with simple yet classic gold or silver pieces, or nude shoes. A pop of color always works well against the blank canvas of an all-white outfit. I personally love turquoise and gold with all white, but any color works. A funky printed clutch and/or shoes are also great ways to stand out in the sea of white. Wearing the right undergarments is extremely important when rocking all white! Unless you want to give folks an end-of-summer treat, check your reflection under several light sources to make sure you are not accidentally flashing everyone! A black bra, thong, shapewear, or leggings (under a jumpsuit) works wonders! Finally, limit the chances of ruining your super chic white outfit before the night ends by sticking to clear drinks and STEP AWAY FROM THE HOT WINGS!
An all-white look is a blank canvas, which makes it one of the most versatile outfits you can build. Keep the silhouette clean, choose undergarments that disappear, and let your accessories set the mood. Whether you go minimalist with metallics or bold with a printed clutch, the key is fit and confidence.
