The Saints Weigh In: What to Wear for Sunday's Best Attire

Is it right for church, or not? Photo Credit: Fashion By Lenny

Hello there, bombshells! A while back I was scrolling my Facebook feed when I stumbled on a photo with a question attached: is this appropriate attire for church? I thought the outfit was adorable, but it wasn't something I'd personally wear to church, mainly because roughly an inch of her midriff was showing. You can probably guess how the comments unfolded. Doesn't social media have a way of drawing out the ugly and the judgmental in people? Goodness, there were scriptures quoted, and she was called everything but a child of God, a slut, a Jezebel... you get the picture. Naturally, the other side argued that people were being too conservative or self-righteous. All of that is what inspired me to write this post.

This navy and white pinstriped wrap dress, paired with pearls and a cheerful pop of mustard, worked well for me at Sunday morning service. I did get a few side eyes, but I also received plenty of warm compliments. And the church didn't spontaneously combust, which is always a plus.

Let me start by saying I wasn't raised in the church, and I don't attend regularly since I don't have a church home. I love God, I love church, and I consider myself a spiritual person. That said, as a wardrobe stylist and image consultant, I'm writing this from that point of view. I also asked my least heathen-y friends (just kidding, lighten up) for their take as well.

As I said, I didn't grow up in the church, though I've always managed to find a congregation that resonated with me wherever I landed (I've lived in 5 different states). I've worshipped on the West Coast, in the Midwest, on the East Coast, and in the South. Personally, I've always kept my own unofficial church dress code, so to speak. I don't wear denim to church, I won't wear an overly fitted skirt or dress, and I skip cleavage, bare midriffs, and short skirts or dresses. Honestly, I didn't use to wear pants to church either, but after enduring Colorado and Ohio winters, I've made exceptions. Overall, yes, I'm someone who loves fashion, but in general I always try to be a lady. I'm all about common courtesy and proper etiquette. I don't want any wandering eyes, whether from the church mothers or anyone else. UNLESS they're blown away by my singing skills, which is unlikely since I can't hold a tune in a cup.

I'd wear this outfit to church in a heartbeat #boop

Now Let the Church Say...

The overall consensus was that your wardrobe should reflect the culture of the church you attend. Some progressive, more modern churches have key members and leaders who take a more casual approach, and in that case it's perfectly fine to dress to match — jeans with an appropriate top, maybe even a blazer. But if you're attending a Black Pentecostal church, well, you'll most likely be wearing your Sunday's best. "So many of the church folk are dressed up on the outside and dying inside. So they look good outwardly, but inwardly look a mess," laments Tenia, a Praise and Worship leader. That truth applies to society at large, too. Of course, some churches remain a bit old-school, where the women wear pantyhose, never bare their shoulders, and God forbid show the midriff. At that kind of church, don't be surprised if the elders give you the side eye and clutch their invisible pearls when you show up in your newfangled wardrobe choices (laughing, but very serious). It's definitely a slippery slope, especially when dealing with certain elders. Their approach can be a touch legalistic and isn't always necessarily rooted in the Bible.

Kelly, a Team Leader at her church (and former Director of Guest Central), says "...if someone wants to go to church and all they have right now are pj's to wear...WEAR IT. People shouldn't judge too harshly because you never know why someone dresses the way they do." In the same vein, Traci, her church's Director of Community Services, advises, "As believers we just have to be careful that we don't push people away because of our preferences, but instead guide them in love." It's easy to get stuck in "traditional norms," especially at church, but it matters to understand and embrace change. It isn't rewriting the Bible, just tweaking the dress code a bit. Sharita, a pastor's daughter and Choir Leader, says, "Growing up we had so many restrictions: long skirts/dresses, stockings, covered toes...but we have definitely evolved!" That evolution of the unofficial dress code is nowhere more obvious than at Worship Team Member Danielle's church, where "...if you come in with shorts and spaghetti straps and flip flops no one will look at you like you're crazy!" All that said, no matter how casual your church's culture is, keep in mind that "...if you wouldn't wear it to court in front of a judge don't wear it to church to be in the presence of the ultimate Judge" (says Traci). Dress as you would for an interview (Kellie recommends), and "Sometimes it's not all about the liberty of doing and wearing what you want, but I represent my church and most importantly my God," explains Zontaye, a devout Christian.

A wild controversy erupted over gospel singer Erica Campbell's body-hugging white dress. "THIS IS NOT OKAY. Yes, you are a beautiful, curvy woman…but NO MA'AM YOU ARE SINGING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. Saints…smh COME ON," wrote one minister known on Facebook as Apostle Stacey Woods. Gospel site A Toast 2 Wealth weighed in too: "The sexy attire takes any man or woman's mind off God and onto other things that aren't godly." Photo Credit: Atlanta Black Star

Closing Thoughts

Hopefully these tips from the saints help you sort out your Sunday best attire. You don't have to take a legalistic approach. It's always my aim to present myself in the best possible light, and it's never my intention to offend anyone, least of all in the house of the Lord. If you're unsure whether an outfit is appropriate, it's best to err on the side of caution and pick something that meshes better with your church's culture. On the other hand, is there ever really a need to cluck about what someone else wears to church? If anything, just keep leading by example. Better yet, be glad they're in church, using their own free will to be exposed to the word and to examples of Godly fellowship. With that in mind: are you more progressive or traditional in your worshipping wardrobe? Stylishly yours, Khalilah.

Choosing what to wear to church comes down to knowing your congregation's culture and dressing with respect for it. Whether your church leans traditional or progressive, the goal is the same: present yourself well and keep the focus on worship rather than wardrobe. When in doubt, lean modest and comfortable, and let your outfit support the occasion instead of distracting from it.
